The Heather Blazer - I went up one to my bigger size for an oversized fit.

The Esme Shorts - I took my regular size. They are TTS and a little snug at the waist but easy to fit because of the elastic in back. But I love that there are still belt loops so you can cover the elastic with a belt if needed.

Packing with Poppy Barley

In March, we celebrated our 9th anniversary with a chillaxed weekend in the mountains. A little snow dusted our roof in the evenings and melted away by mid morning, but it stilll seemed magical to our little sea level dwelling hearts.

I booked this mini trip last November as a Christmas/upcoming anniversary present, and it turned into such a surprise gift for both of us. If we had known then that we would be knee deep in purchasing a home this spring, then I doubt we would have dared book a swanky lodge getaway. But since it was already paid for, there was nothing left but to enjoy and feel grateful for the timing and the breath of rest before we wade through escrow and the adventure that lies beyond it.

We're not major travelers in this season of life parenting littles, but when we do go, planning and packing my outfits is one of the fun highlights. I love a special occasion to enjoy my favorite pieces.

On this mini trip, I was excited for the cool mountain temps because I wanted to wear my new Poppy Barley pieces and some cozy layers. Can I get an amen for sweater weather?

Packing List

So for three days away, I packed:

Black heeled boots
Matching belt
2 pairs of jeans (one would have totally been sufficient but you know how I am about denim!)

This trip was my first time getting to wear my new Poppy Barley pieces out in the wild, so I wanted to write a little review for you of all three.

Boots

The High Street Ankle Boots are such a sophisticated feeling, date night approved boot. I love the toe shape which is designed to be timeless - a perfect blend between a round and pointed toe. The sculpted line up from the heel curves in for an elegant slim shaft. This feminine tailoring really makes the boot much easier to dress up with skirts and dresses because the shoe helps elongate your leg line. And of course the High Street Boots look super sharp with your favorite pants, too.

While they are a dressier boot and not exactly a rugged choice for traipsing around in melted snow, they performed great and were easy to walk in when we went exploring in the manzanita outside the lodge. Though they're not a hiking boot by any means, I felt safe with the sturdy block heel and just went a little cautiously on the icy spots.

For sizing, I went up to my larger half size which is my usual go-to with boots for plenty of toe wiggle room and space for socks. The High Street Boots fit well in my bigger size, so I would definitely recommend going up a half size for comfort.

The craftsmanship is so obvious on this beautiful boot with gorgeous leather that is Leather Working Group certified, and it really speaks volumes about how Poppy Barley, as a certified B Corp , prioritizes ethical and sustainable measures throughout the brand.

Belt

And because nothing feels more complete in an outfit than a belt that compliments your shoes, I packed this chic little Polished Belt from Poppy Barley , as well, which looks great with the boots or on its own mixing and matching with many shoe options.

If you are new to investing in leather for your closet, a belt is always where I recommend starting. Price point wise, a quality leather belt is not really a whole lot more than purchasing a cheap synthetic version. But where a plastic belt will begin to crack and look worn after a year or two, a leather belt can be in your closet for the rest of your life with minimal TLC.

If you're intimidated by accessorizing with a belt, this is the perfect subtle piece that will magically elevate your outfits without feeling too bold.

And in terms of cost per wear, I'm certain that I'm already down to dollars and cents per wear because I've enjoyed adding the Polished Belt to soooo many outfits in just the couple of months I've had it in my closet.

Diaper Bag

Our oldest potty trained last year and we are done with diapers, so why in the world did I order a new diaper bag for this parent's only trip?

With tons of structured storage compartments and a wipeable cleanable lining, this Poppy Barley Beyond Diaper Bag is the perfect backpack for moms. But I picked it out to act as my new camera bag, and it worked out perfectly with plenty of room for my camera, equipment, laptop, makeup bag and jewelry.

Review of the Rowan Merilee Pants

The Merilee 5 Pocket Pants are new at Rowan this year and already a fan favorite selling out in the dusky navy color. (But I heard an insider rumor that they will be coming back in new colors, too!) With a soft subtly stretching canvas, the Merilee pants are tailored to fit perfectly at the waist and eliminate that pesky back gap. They are a classic high rise and hit at my ankle.

Sizing is loose especially in the faded black colorway which runs a bit large - so I went down one size. Take your regular size in the other colors unless you like a very fitted waist. I love the back pocket placement which looks great in the back, too.

The Barrel Shape

The silhouette is the most interesting part of these pants. At first glance, they look like a classic straight jean - straight all the way from the hip to the ankle rather than tapered. But if you look up close, they have a unique dart placed at the knee that gives them a very subtle swinging curve inward.

I think this is such a cool under-the-radar take on the current barrel jean trend that is growing in popularity right now. But what I like about Rowan's version is how understated the shape is. And that makes these jeans a timeless pick you can wear for years even after the barrel trend is out.

Are Neutrals Over?

I've run across several videos lately outraging against minimalist capsules and neutral wardrobes . And while I think the shift toward brighter colors, prints and maximalism is an interesting one to watch (hello Y2K), I don't think neutrals or minimalist dressing are all that "evil" or even going out of style.

Since very minimal normcore outfits and stripped neutral focused capsules have been in vogue for so long, it's natural that the next shift is going to answer with some brighter colors and popping prints. (We're seeing this in home decor too with the advent of maximalist granny chic decorating and bold floor to ceiling color after a decade of white walls and clean beige kitchens).

It's extremely normal for a new trend to spring up in reaction to a previous long reigning trend. Typically major cultural and design movements are reacting against the status quo. But just because something was prevalent and widespread doesn't make it wrong. It might make it dated, though, over time as a new trend grows in popularity.

But even as brighter colors enter the stores and our closets, I don't think that neutrals are on their way out.

I didn't realize how much a few core basics, like a white tee and a black tank, could completely solve the "I have nothing to wear" crisis in my closet until I started focusing on finding better basics.

The truth is that in a closet of only loud colors, there is nothing to create outfits with. You need the black pants to pair with the fabulous paisley babydoll blouse and the white tank is a must to help you wear the gorgeous orange skirt.

I'm glad that these bloggers have called attention to the truth that some people (with probably way cooler personalities than my own!) are craving bold color and don't feel at home in a neutral closet. And that's beautiful and I'm glad people looking for maximalism can find inspiration.

But why I wanted to write just a bit about this shift is that it overlooks those of us who rely on our neutrals to create more outfits out of less items. We enjoy the simple clarity that a neutral outfit gives us in a busy day of overwhelm and sensory overload.

Clothing should be there to support you on the day to day and provide an outlet for creative expression and personality, too! So absolutely embrace those fun colors when you're feeling playful and bold. But don't let anyone tell you that you are boring (or a corporate sell out) because you choose neutrals, too.

Are neutrals boring?

Maybe they can be, but I definitely don't think neutrals have to be! This is a very simple monochromatic color pallet but with the fun texture and print elements it feels fresh and feminine and springy to me. IDK maybe I'm just basic. ;-)

What always adds interest and polish to a simple jeans and tee/sweater look? Psst - it's a four letter accessory. That's right! A belt.

Belts are definitely having a moment in the spotlight lately wether you're looking at quiet luxury trend or the western wear resurgence.

Why I think belts are fabulous is you can choose one that as simple classic or one bursting with fun groovy personality. Belts are also a relatively less expensive place to addition to your closet that can have a real impact.

And it doesn't cost tons more to purchase a real leather belt that with just a little TLC will last you a lifetime. Where a synthetic faux leather material will crease, crack and show signs of wear quickly that leave your outfit looking less than polished, a real leather can be cared for and conditioned to keep looking great for decades.

You can also thrift unique and vintage belts, shop secondhand for the vibe or designer look or buy one new. Here are a few of my current favs:

Western Croco Belt (I found this one on Etsy and it's mens sizing so measure carefully and if you're smaller than a size small/medium you may need to hunt for a women's version instead.)

Braided Leather Belt (You can use code: ALEXDAVIESLIVING20)

Some of my favorite places to hunt for cool vintage or secondhand belts are Poshmark, eBay and Etsy. And for shopping new belts, I love PoppyBarley , ABLE , Feda Salvador and Nisolo .

If you have a belt that doesn't fit quite right, you can use one of these inexpensive tools to punch a new hole right where you need it. If you don't want to buy one, check with your horse friend to see if she has a leather hole punch you can borrow.

I like to store my belt collection on S- Hooks in my closet so that they don't get too bendy or erased rolled up or folded in a drawer.

For those kind enough to ask about how I did my hair in the Instagram Video companion to this post here , this is the story. (Disclaimer: I'm not a hair girlie.) So I am blow dryer inept but I love how my hair feels after a cut and blow out, so I picked up this Revlon blow dryer brush tool on a whim and on sale at Costco and it's like the easiest most doable thing. I can use it to give my hair a smooth and shine, easy 3 minute waves and even round brush my bangs all in one.

3 Min Waves "Tutorial" (air quotes because again, I am not qualified to teach anyone about their hair!)

Brush out your hair
Part into two sections
With the blow dryer brush, start to brush down from the top of one side, then begin to slowly twist and spin the brush catching all the hair on that side and turning out away from your face.
Keep twisting and gently pulling down until you've gathered that whole half of your hair in one twist. (You can repeat this a couple of times to catch any hair that was left out and then repeat on the second side.)
Let it cool for 2-4 minutes.
Gently rake your fingers through to separate the one big curl into waves and tada!

10 Ways to Wear a Classic T-Shirt Dress

In early January, I had the sneak peek privilege of seeing some of ABLE's new releases planned for spring. This t-shirt dress was at the top of my must try list because it's the same cut and fabric as my favorite cropped striped tee - the Maria Boxy Tee.

I love the new bolder brown stripe and the almost vintage soft and warm hue this dress has. It also comes in a versatile solid black. The fabric is just as thick and buttery soft as the t-shirt version. In most t-shirt dresses, the fabric is a little on the thin side and makes me feel a bit revealed in back. So I love that this dress is a long midi length with a thick quality 100% cotton that provides all the coverage I want with no slip required.

Sizing on the dress runs a bit bigger than the tee shirt version. I went with my regular size and have plenty of room. So If you are a straight fit or want a more curve hugging fit, I'd recommend sizing down. A friend asked me if this might work as a baby bump friendly dress, and with the extra loose room and subtle stretch it offers, I definitely think it would be adorable as a maternity piece for most if not all of your pregnancy.

Jean Jackets and dresses have definitely been done. They pair might feel a bit dated, so to keep it fresh and modernize the pairing here are some tips:

Belt the dress under the jacket - this is a great option for a t-shirt dress to create shape where there isn't a defined waist.
Button the first two buttons of the jacket collar and layer with a couple of bling statement necklaces.
Opt for a more trendy oversized denim jacket or a loose denim shirt.

How to Use the Capsule

This capsule is designed to pull closet classics with a few current silhouettes so that it’s easy to update and enjoy year after year.

You can use this capsule as a jumping off point to create your own that is true to your own unique style. You can customize the color pallet to one that reflects your favorites or some of the hues that you know you feel at home in.

What can you substitute?
Don’t love wide leg jeans? Substitute them for your favorite trusty pair. Want to add a punch of color? Trade the neutral sweater for a zesty red cardigan or swap out one of the jeans for a fun colored pair of denim. .

You can also swap pieces to dress up the capsule and make it work for more professional or formal environments. For instance, swap the quilted jacket for a blazer and a pair of the jeans for some trousers.

How to Collect Your Capsule

I hope this is a helpful getting started place for you. I’ve included links to my items or similar ones where mine aren’t available. This capsule isn't something I purchased overnight. It's been at least three years if not longer planning purchases and slowly adding pieces to my closet a few per season. Most of the items I linked are higher budget investment pieces that need to be planned and saved for.

So I'd encourage you to start by shopping your own closet. And then once you’ve identified gaps you wish to fill, you can shop thrift stores or secondhand sites like Poshmark and eBay. The great thing about this capsule relying on classic wardrobe staples is that you can buy last season’s pieces and still feel polished and current in your capsule.

Pick a couple items to focus on each season as you slowly build your wardrobe. Honestly the slow closet is the best way to hone in on your personal style and discover what you truly love instead of doing one massive shopping spree.

Now for some of extra special pieces in the capsule...

Le Trench

I've written extensively already about my love for this special piece (linking to those trench coat love notes her e), so it's no surprise that my spring exclusive with Able - the Kimberly Trench Coat - is a foundational part of my French inspired capsule. Shoes

For footwear in this transitional season capsule, I like to keep a pair of chic boots in rotation. I found the most elegant timeless ankle boot recently at Poppy Barley . I love the sculpted lines of the shoe and how the High Street Boot curves in with your calf through the shaft to help keep the leg line elongated making it perfect for wearing with a variety of jean including wide leg crops and dresses, too. Another closed toe option, ballet flats are so totally French girl approved. There are so many variations of this trend that make it really fun to shop right now. The Mary Jane style is especially having a moment reimagined with multiple straps or even studs. I like this very classic version here also from Poppy Barley and this unique twist on the style that I've been wearing a bunch lately.

I will also always keep a trusty pair of sneakers in my capsule. As a mom of three littles, it's a must to have a trusty all day shoe for our days out, plus I love the fun casual contrast of a sneaker with a dress or pair of pleated trousers.

And I'm including a versatile strappy walking sandal for more range as the weather warms.

Shirts

This is not your average chambray shirt. It's perfect for creating chic denim on denim looks (side note: it looks amazing layered under the Kimberly Trench Coat with some jeans!) and also super practical for an easy breezy weekend outfit left untucked over skinny jeans or leggings with it's oversized length that scoops perfectly well below the hip.

Button Down Shirts are a surprisingly substantial part of this capsule. Another favorite that I'm relying on heavily this spring is the Sophia Striped Button Down . This vintage inspired cabana stripe is a really fun throwback while feeling very relevant this season.

I love the faded cream and brown colors that make it feel like an old faithful piece. (It does come in a lovely green, too.) The crisp poplin fabric is not see through at all and holds it's shape really well making it so easy to wear. Each week, I'm finding new great outfits to incorporate this piece in.

Jewelry

You don't need a ton of accessories for this capsule, but a few key jewelry pieces will really bring these outfits to life. Simple everyday gold hoops are a must for me because earrings are so powerful at dressing up your look. (Or the new larger daily hoop here .) And you can add your favorite locket or coin necklace or layer a few pieces along with it.

Fitted black top (Long sleeve or sweater in winter or ribbed tank in summer)

Not a fan of fitted tops? Lookout for tomorrow’s post where I’ll show you a looser option to pair with your wide leg jeans!

Black belt
Wide leg jeans (substitute for a baggy jean, straight leg denim, trouser, or wide leg crop but avoid a skinny jean with this look as that takes away the proportional contrast and balance of this “tiny top baggy bottom” recipe)
Black shoes on bottom to complete the outfit sandwich
Don’t forget a few well chosen accessories like a matching or contrasting bag and capsule jewelry

This simple color pallet is easy to add a layer like a long coat or cropped jacket.

You can also substitute with other colors in your closet, but I love the classy feel of black sandwiching your denim.

Over Christmas break, my daughter was given this bead kit and she asked me to sit and make a bracelet with her. Came up with this little French inspired friendship bracelet that was so fun to sit and string together with her. Switching to a Slow Shopping Mentality

I scrolled past a beautiful skirt set the other day and started debating. So cute, but do I actually “need” it? Luckily, a lightbulb went on… ��

You can’t keep an “add to cart” mentality when you switch to slow fashion.

For many of us making the shift to shop slower and ethically, it’s hard to shake the high rate of consumption that we’ve grown accustomed to because of fast fashion.

I’m gradually retraining my brain to approach shopping not as a repeated quick dopamine hit but as a thoughtful intentional strategy - planning what I need for the longterm rather than grabbing what looks cute spur of the moment.

When I’m thoughtfully considering one pair of jeans to wear for the next 3+ years (hopefully much longer) or a shirt that fills a gap in my closet and can be worn multiple ways for years to come, it’s easier to identify the value of the item and whether or not I truly need it for my closet and want to use my budget for it.

Let’s learn to appreciate but not “need” to add to cart.

I have a ways to go to detach myself from bright shiny object syndrome. It reminds me of how my bible study teacher rewrote the lyrics to Arianna Grande’s “I see it. I want it. I got it,” song. Instead s he said , “I want it. Don’t got it. Still happy!” And that’s the fresh perspective I want to cultivate with shopping.

As we scroll and open sale emails this week, we are going to see countless cute things. So let’s learn to appreciate a cute piece but not always “need” to add to cart.

Shopping Strategies to Survive Black Friday

Keep a list in your phone notes of pieces you want. Countless times, adding an item to this list scratches that add to cart itch and gives me time to consider the purchase and realize either I don’t care or I actually do want to make a plan to add it to my closet in the near future.
Use reverse girl math. Instead of doing the justification dance of it’s 50% off so I’m losing money if I don’t grab it, remember it is never a loss to give yourself more time to consider a purchase. Perhaps it will cost $20 more when you come back and decide to buy it a month from now, but being certain and sure of your purchase will help you value and use the item more which is worth it in the long run.
Focus on core closet essentials. The best way to be strategic this Black Friday is to use it to help build a better closet instead of getting distracted by bright shiny deals. Keep your closet gaps and planned investment purchases in mind as you scan Black Friday sales.
Hit unsubscribe. Your inbox is getting inundated with promos this week. It’s a good time to clear some clutter and unsubscribe from retailer lists that are tempting.

Why does it have to be French? The comment I get a lot whenever I post one of these French girl capsules is that it's a universally classic chic style not one that just belongs to the Europeans. The Brooke Sweater Coat is a cozy modern take on the classic camel coat. It has a soft unstructured sweater feel that makes it easy to throw on and live in. The sleeves are very wide and open for layering, too. I really like the detailed curve of the pockets. The coat is 55% cotton with a mix of polyester and nylon. 1. Versatility ~ Choose a coat that can take you from school drop off, to date night to brunch on the weekend.

But as synthetic fabrics go, this is a very high quality one, and I made an exceptions because I've struggled with wrinkles in my other trouser style pants. Another note, the Claire Crepe pants have two front belt loops but they are essentially decorative as there are no other belt loops in back, and the back is elastic for an easy fit. They come in camel and black.

Not a new release but an old favorite at this point, the Mary Easy Pants are my favorite go to casual day or travel outfit. I took my regular size, and I love the deep pockets and thick cotton canvas that holds up well during the day. They are high rise and come in two neutral colors.

This week, we drove up to the local mountains in Julian, California to pick apples and watch a cider press in action. October is the height of cider season and there were close to twenty apply tree varieties ripe for harvest at Ranchita del Rio.

If you're headed up to Julian, here are my must see stops in this quaint little piece of San Diego.

The Warm Hearth of Julian store is right in the middle of Main Street and a literal treasure trove of all the beautiful things from gifts, to kitchen and decor. There are multiple levels and it's a shopping paradise. Their kiddo tent on the lower back level is one of my fav spots.
Definitely don't leave Julian without trying some fresh raw apply cider and everybody's fav - the pie. We're partial to the Julian Pie Shop at the end of Main Street. There's usually a line but it's worth it.
On the way back down the hill, a stop at Dudley's Bakery is a must. Enjoy the veggie sandwich and take a loaf of fresh bread home.

The new Lennon Boyfriend jacket is an updated modern take on the trend toward extra oversized roomy pieces that we've seen lately. The shoulders are regular not dropped. And it drapes well and hangs below the hip. The cut is square and straight as opposed to some 80s style jackets that have an almost rounded feel.

The wash is a true blue and matches really well with a lot of mid range blue denim washes which makes it easy to pair with your fav jeans for a double denim look.

Go with your normal size on this piece. This piece is designed to fit oversized but is made for your size. So you get the boyfriend loose look but with sleeves the right length that sit at the shoulder.

Belts have hopped back into the spotlight lately, but they're always a classic outfit addition. Whether you want to add a little polish and elevate an outfit or change the shape of a dress and define your waist, a belt is a fantastic accessory option and a perfect third piece for summer when it's too hot to layer.

A leather belt is one of the most affordable investment items that will elevate your whole closet. While a leather bag or shoes might be a higher ticket item to save for, a good leather belt that will last for decades can be found for a much smaller price tag.

When should you add a belt to your look? Think of adding a belt like you would any other accessory - necklace, statement earrings, scarf, etc.

Nine times out of ten, I will swap a matching fabric belt out for a contrasting leather belt on a pair of trousers, shorts or a dress. It adds more structure saving you from the trouble of a slouchy bow and helps to highlight the waist.

Looser dresses are another great opportunity to add a belt. The key with dresses is to make sure your belt just isn’t overpowering the dress. Make sure a wider belt is balanced with the right amount of volume in the dress. I tend to avoid belting fitted and empire waist dresses.

Monochrome outfits are another excellent opportunity to highlight the look with a belt. I love to add a warm natural leather belt to an all white outfit or a solid black combo. A skinny black belt is another great option for a more modern refined approach to both these monochrome options.

Who's Naming These Trends?

Coastal Grandmother, Coastal Cowgirl, Parisian or Hot Girl Summer. There have been so many interestingly named trends lately. Don't even get me started on the latest emerging Gen Z aesthetic - "Tomato Girl Summer."

One of these trends that has established itself for 2023 is "European Summer." I spent a little time on Pinterest researching "Euro Summer," and the trend with over 2.7Million hits on TikTok seems to have sprouted out of increased numbers of Americans traveling to Europe this summer and romanticizing their perfectly curated travel wardrobes and the aspirational ideal of luxury travel.

Just an Aspiration or An Actual Way to Dress?

Images ranged from white maxi skirts and chunky sandals to more refined linen trousers and vests and sleek buns walking cobblestone streets and sipping cappuccinos. With 2023 still not that far from global shutdowns and travel restrictions, it make sense that we have so much to romanticize about.

On the flip side, I heard from a few Europeans who pointed out that not every European country has a hot sandy beach on the Mediterranean. I also read some articles laughing at Americans for treating the continent as one country. But from what I can tell, European Summer seems more about the tourists and what they imagine European life looking like than what actual Europeans are wearing right now.

So what is "Euro Summer" and how can you implement the look even if you don't have big travel plans this season?

I'm interpreting European Summer as classy, refined, elegant outfits that would feel effortless on a vacation abroad. (Does saying "abroad" giveaway just how many 1800s books and period movies I watch?) But the best part is that you don't need to fly to Greece or even leave your own city to enjoy dressing a little fancy in some Euro Summer looks.

Some Tips to Make this Capsule Your Own

Just like with any capsule wardrobe, it's great to pick a few core colors to stick with. It feels backwards but a simplified color pallet will expand the number of outfit options you can create with your capsule. When everything matches. you can mix more outfits.

Another tip for using this capsule, is that you don't need to buy new things! Instead, I hope this capsule is a visual base you can pull from and for the most part shop your closet to substitute these items with what you already own. You might have a gap or two to fill in. But get creative with how you shop your closet.

I do 93% of shopping for my closet online now . It's a crazy shift, but shopping online has helped me become more intentional (by avoiding impulse buys when I walk in for groceries) and more sustainable and ethical in my purchases.

When you shop online you get the unique opportunity of trying on at home instead of in the dressing room. It's a pressure free environment where you can take a few days to decide on the item and even try it out with your closet.

Top 5 Online Shopping Mistakes

1. Wear the Right Shoes

I can't count the times I've put an outfit on with my cozy house slippers and felt so frumpy that I said, "Ugh," and changed immediately.

Recently, I was trying on a wedding guest dress with my Ugg boots making a face in the mirror when my husband walked by and helpfully asked, "What shoes are you gonna wear?" A lightbulb went off. I changed into heels and instantly loved the dress.

The problem is one that's common whether we're trying something on in the dressing room or at a home. Depending on the piece, it can feel off if we're wearing an inappropriate shoe that doesn't match the occasion of the new item.

Taking the extra 30 seconds to grab real shoes you plan to wear with the new outfit, and then you'll be able to make a clearer judgement about how much you love it. This shoe check will also show you if you don't have the right footwear to pair with the look and if keeping this item will mean you are now on the hook to go shoe shopping.

Undergarments like the right bra o r no show undies are also important checks if something feels sloppy or off.

One of the biggest shopping pitfalls is ordering items that don't mix into the closet you already have. If you find pieces you love, but then they sit in your closet and don't get worn, try the 3 outfit test.

Before cutting the tags on your new find, try it on with 3-5 outfits. Finding real ways you can wear the new piece with the closet you already own i s a fair road test of how versatile and usable the new item is. Plus, if you decide to keep the piece, you'll be bringing 3+ whole new outfits into your closet that you've "practiced" with and are ready to grab and enjoy.

3. The House Test

With some jeans and leather shoes, it can be tricky to tell how much they will "break in" and stretch out. I am definitely guilty of keeping tight jeans that look and feel amazing but are super tricky to sit down in. I still love them, but I reach for them less often because they're not as easy to do real life in. And when we're talking about building an intentional closet, functionality is important.

5. Read the Return Policy

The complaint I get the most about online shopping is handling (or completely forgetting to do) returns. For a lot of us, return shipping often falls off our to do lists, and those great deals we got online end up costing us wasted $$.

I think this is the biggest regret that prevents women from shopping online. But this barrier is really not too hard to overcome i f you can mentally commit to the return process before you purchase online.

Read through the return policy and understand how it's going to work before you add the item to your cart. Decide if you are comfortable with the process and any fees.

My favorite returns are when the company sends you a return label with your item taking away any excuse for me not to just pop it back in the mail. But this isn't standard yet and a close second is when you can choose Happy Returns like at ABLE. You grab a barcode online and then drop it off at any local Happy Return location. It's super simple and quick because they process your refund or exchange as soon as you drop off the item.

Notes on Motherhood and Style

What does being a mother mean to you?

Motherhood is a call to sacrifice and serve something beyond ourselves, and I think in our current culture that is viewed almost as a bad thing. But when it's all said and done, family is the gold, and I don't think we will ever regret the hard work and love we poured out for our kiddos in each season.

How old are your kiddos?

I have three littles all under 7.

Has your fashion sense evolved through motherhood?

Motherhood is really responsible for helping me fall in love with style. When I was in the thick of postpartum after my second daughter's birth, I needed some momentum for my days. I learned how psychological getting dressed really is. Just putting on jeans and a pair of earrings and escaping my pajamas (even if I didn't change till like 2pm!) helped me feel so much more productive. All the style stuff just spiraled from there. I devoured any youtube video or blog I could find on personal style and started to craft my own.

Any style advice for mothers trying to keep up with trends?

The oversized loose fit shift that's been happening for a while now is a trend I was reluctant to try, but I'm starting to dabble in it and Wow! So comfy, fun, casual and cool. Definitely mom life approved. But I would also add; Don't overlook your basics. Trends are fun to add in here or there. But a solid pair of jeans and a few good tanks, tees and tops are the base you need to make getting dressed everyday fun and effortless. I avoided basics for a long time and chased all the cute statement pieces but often still couldn't pull together outfits. And it's because I didn't have the solid foundation for my closet to build on.

How about for expecting mamas trying to find pieces to wear through pregnancy?

Woooh! Pregnancy is full of just so many emotions - all the warm fuzzy feelings and love for your precious baby, but then the rapid changes to your body that can make you feel a little out of control. Luckily, the current trend toward more oversized fits is super bump friendly and will allow you to shop outside the maternity section.

I wish I had invested in a couple of well fitting basics during my pregnancies instead of trying to make do with clothes I had that kept getting tighter and random hand-me-downs that didn't feel true to my style. Even though it's only 9 months, it's a really important time to feel comfortable and confident. I know for me all the feelings about my changing body were compounded by poorly-fitting maternity clothes.

You don't need a whole lot, but a great pair of leggings, maternity jeans, a loose button down shirt, and some easy breezy dresses will see you through really well.

Any other tips to all the moms out there?

It probably sounds silly, but one of the harder parts of becoming a mama for me was accepting my changing body and all the squishy newness of pregnancy and postpartum. If I could go back, I would try to reframe my perspective for one of grace toward my body and appreciation of the literal miracle she was housing. Instead of judging every new stretch mark and pound, I would tell myself that this is a season not forever. It's okay to have an extra chin because the tiny person growing inside is worth it. And even now that I'm past breastfeeding and sleep training days, my body is still changing. But it's okay that potty training is hard work (and I'm convinced literally bringing in silver hairs) because the payoff is absolutely worth it.

The quality is noticeable. There’s a major difference in feel and longevity between a thin slub tee and a thick robust knit. Organic cotton creates a stronger fiber to last. And the thicker knit fabric lays better and looks better in my outfits.

The Bailey Classic Jacket

Denim jackets are a hallmark of American fashion originating in the 1800s as a chore jacket for cowboys and ranchers developed by the iconic Levi Strauss. They’ve since evolved over the decades from boxy massively oversized 80s jackets to the tiny cropped fitted Y2K version.

A denim jacket is a versatile forever piece. (A friend told me yesterday, she’s still wearing hers from high school!)

There aren’t very many items that I’d say every closet needs because we are all so unique and so is our personal style. But a jean jacket is definitely up there as a piece that most of us will wear over and over again.

Right now we are seeing jean jackets trend back toward those boxy boyfriend oversized fits. The current trend toward baggy 80s and 90s style trucker jean jackets is so fun, but it's not the easiest to style effectively . I also don’t expect this trend to stand the test of time. Ways to Wear Nisolo Huarache Sandals

Meet my new go to sandal for every casual spring and summer look. Comfy and breathable, the Huarache Sandal from Nisolo Shoes (pronounced wuh· raa ·chee) has all the detail and beautiful leather work I've come to expect from this dreamy brand but with extra all day comfort and stretch.

Aside from their gorgeous refined shoes, Nisolo is a gem of a brand that pays 100% living wages to everyone in it's employ + sends a sustainability fact sheet with each purchase documenting how the shoe was made and it's eco-friendly "footprint." I love how transparent the brand is about how it treats people and the planet.

Sizing: the recommendation on Nisolo's site is to go down one half size. The leather work will ease and stretch over time to give you a nice fit in the longterm. I hate breaking in shoes when I can avoid it, so I went with my regular size instead and I love the fit and how comfy they are to wear. I will report back over time and see how much they wear in and stretch. But for now, I would say you can safely order either one half size down or your regular size and be happy!

How to Re-Wear Your Birks this Spring

This spring I'm excited to add a few new classic pieces to my closet, but I also want to focus on enjoying and finding fresh ways to style last year's additions.

I posted a question box asking what pieces you need help restyling this spring and Birkenstock sandals popped up a couple times. Last spring, I added a white pair of similar buckle sandals from one of my all time favorite brands ABLE. These shoes are known for their comfort. But the wide footprint is certainly not what I go to when I think classic chic feminine style. Choosing to add these sandals to my closet was definitely reaching more toward my casual California roots and the casual side of my closet aesthetic. But I think that's what makes them so fun. The larger more masculine casual look adds contrast to a feminine shorts look and helps make a dress feel easy and unpretentious.

Some tips I would remember are that these shoes can cause an outfit to feel bottom heavy if you don't take the proportions of the look as a whole into account. So consider balancing the top with a wider shoulder silhouette, or conversely, in a wide leg pant opt for a feminine fitted top to create the contrast. And in a dress, opt for letting the ankle show to help balance the weight of the shoes.

It turns out there aren't actually that many rules to wearing bootcut jeans. This classic is back again in 2023 and it's such a universally flattering silhouette, that many OG bootcut wearers are cheering to see their comeback.

What makes a bootcut jean so easy to wear for multiple body types? It's all in the slim leg and tapered bottom flare.

That flare outward really helps to balance curvy hips and pear shapes with a similar symmetrical curve out at the hem. And for straighter friends, the bottom flare helps to hand some more shape and curvature. Inverted triangle and apple shaped friends can also enjoy the way that a fitted bootcut jeans highlight their legs and then create a little balance at the bottom of their outfits.

So moral of the story: no one needs to feel left out when it comes to bootcut denim.

My number one tip for wearing bootcut jeans is to think about how you want to harness their amazing balancing power for your individual frame. For me with curvy hips, I like to pair my bootcuts with a button up shirt to create a more straight silhouette that's balanced on top and bottom. Others might choose to accentuate and play up the hips by pairing their bootcut jeans with a more form fitted top, or simply something with more drape than structure. When you know how to a style can either emphasize or de-emphasize, then you have more control and intention in how you incorporate it in an outfit.

Another note about bootcuts is that they do originate from western wear. So unless you want to go full cowgirl, avoid costume-y outfits by minimizing the other western themed pieces you pair with the jeans. I like to intentionally choose more chic and feminine accessories like simple layered jewelry and neutral colors to help avoid farmer costume-ville.

Finally, what shoes can you wear with bootcut jeans? Shoe choice is often the most confusing part of adapting to new denim trends. Fortunately, you can pull off almost any shoe with your bootcut jeans. A pointed toe flat, mule or boot will always look very polished and help elongate the leg line.

Round toes like clogs can also work. Since they tend to be more bottom heavy, just make sure your jean hem is long enough to cover most of the shoe and leave the toe peeping out.

Sandals and heels also work great with bootcuts (again leave a longer hem for pairing with heels). And you can even play with sneakers.

Blazers have been on trend for a while now, and they promise not to go anywhere in 2023. Here are some tips to help you keep wearing your fab blazer into spring with all the dresses + skirts.

✨Add a belt under the blazer to help create definition in a flowy dress.

Casual Blazer Style 101

Blazers: They’ve been in the spotlight for a few years now and according to trend forecasters, they’re not going anywhere soon. Last week, I posted a question box asking friends to tell me their blazer style struggles. In a flood of responses, women shared questions like:

-How do I not look like my dad?

-Should I take the shoulder pads out or leave them in?

-What’s the right length for me as a pear shape?

-How do I make it look more feminine?

And the majority response I read over and over was - how do I make a blazer look casual?

We’ll talk about answers to all the rest today, but I want to focus here on this question because it’s right where my initial hesitancy about blazers stemmed.

I’m a stay at home mom. Wearing a blazer felt like I was trying to look like "the boss" when I first encountered the trend. I didn't see how it could fit into my closet as a SoCal work at home mom. But then curiosity and exposure therapy got the better of me, and I had to try one. Now I am a full convert with a growing collection of blazers.

With these few simple styling keys, it is possible to strike that perfect blazer balance of cool and casual. And a blazer can become a surprising go-to in your closet, too.

Materials Always Matter

Secret sewist over here, so you know I care about fabric. The right fabric is what helped me start actually wearing blazers. If you want to purchase your first casual blazer, steer away from houndstooth wool with gold buttons. I know, so beautiful! But as a beginning blazer wearer, I found a light soft linen blazer way more approachable and easy to mix into my closet.

As your confidence in styling blazers grows, absolutely go for that gorgeous structured piece. But get your toes wet with something accessible and easier to mix into your existing wardrobe.

Thinking About Structure

Anytime you’re building an outfit, it’s important to think about the structure and softness of the pieces you pull from your closet. Striking a balance between the two is usually the goal.

Structured garments create that shape and definition that gives a look a more polished edge. However, it can also tend to take things in a more formal and masculine direction.

A blazer is definitely a structured piece. It’s created with a lot of tailoring, and it hangs away from the body in its own defined shape. So if you’re aiming to take a blazer out of the boardroom and incorporate it in a more casual look, the ratio of softness to structure needs to be higher on the softer casual elements of the look.

Much of the time, we build outfits with a lot of softer pieces first. You’ve probably heard style bloggers say something like, now let’s add some structure and definition with a denim jacket on top of this dress.

So it’s a little bit of working backward when we think about a blazer look. The blazer is one of the final top layer pieces we will add. So we know that our base needs to be built on the casual soft side.

Here’s an example: instead of a base layer of a button up shirt, choose a pullover sweater, hoodie or a loose tee.

Add a Little Femininity

Historically, blazers have been worn by both men and women from the 1880s to the 1980s, and today they’re much more of a women ruled trend. But initially, blazers were created for men as a bridge in the gap between the formal suit jacket and the casual sports coat that could be worn without matching pants.

Okay, history channel moment over. My point here is that the broad shoulder line and the boxy fit of the current oversized blazer trend creates more masculine leaning lines. So just like we want to balance the structure with some softness, we also want to incorporate balancing feminine elements into a good blazer look.

Some easy ways to do this are to add:

-extra jewelry (This doesn’t mean you have to go with big chunky pieces especially as those can feel more formal and fancy. Instead layer multiple delicate everyday pieces like a ring or bracelet stack. I think the key here is thinking minimal chic.)

-a pointed toe shoe or even a low heel

-sliding up the sleeves to show the forearm which is a point of femininity

-a belt

-a popped collar or layered necklaces in a “V” shape to highlight the neckline

-an ankle crop jean

-blush, lip color and hair on blazer days as these are all ways to help accentuate the feminine in a look.

Keep It Casual

Finally, just think about what you would normally wear for a casual look and stick with it. Opt for relaxed pants like jeans. Grab the white tee or basic tank. Layer a hoodie underneath to create a balanced contrast and an urban chic look. Grab that baseball cap to top it off.

Shoe choice can also make a big difference here. Think sneakers and sandals.

Next, keep it casual by choosing more relaxed pants like jeans. If you do want to add trousers to your blazer, then focus on shoe choice sneakers work well to bring things down to a casual level. [In the sneaker trouser example at the very top of this post, you can notice that because my pants are a little more formal, I’m course correcting by swinging even farther on the casual shoe spectrum to help bring the whole look into balance.]

Feeling too professional when I want it to look casual. Help? - Focus on more casual fabrics like a linen or Tencel blazer in a lighter color as opposed to a tweed wool blazer with gold buttons that starts out feeling very professional and formal.

What’s the best style for someone with a larger chest? You can wear any style that you like whether that’s single or double breasted. But I would pay extra attention to the fabric. A more flowy fabric will help lay and fit better and deemphasize the bust where a stiff structured piece will add more volume.

Where should the length hit on a pear shaped short/petite body with full thighs? Traditionally, blazers are supposed to hit mid thigh. In different decades they’ve fallen lower or a bit higher above the hip. Currently, the oversized boxy blazer is in. I think this hits best at a traditional mid to high thigh height. I’m a pear shape as well, and I like it best when my blazer hits south of my hip thereby bypassing my widest point and falling in the top third of my thigh range.

How do you know if the fit is right? The beauty of the oversized trend is that the fit is more up to you. You can opt for something very true to size or not if you love a big roomy casual look.

Finding an oversized look that doesn’t look ridiculous on my pear shaped short waist frame? Definitely try a cropped blazer. There are some gorgeous and very traditional throwback options coming out right now that are cropped above the hip which will draw the eye up and work well with your short waist.

Shoulder pads! Would you remove them? That really just depends on what you feel comfortable with in your blazer. This black cupro blazer from Parallel 51 surprised me that it came with shoulder pads. But they give it a lot of shape because it’s a more drapey fabric. Modern shoulder pads don’t tend to be as prominent as those in a vintage 80s blazer. If you have broader shoulders you may want to remove them so as not to add extra volume. But if you love your shoulders and want to emphasize them, keep those fun shoulder pads.

How do I wear my double breasted blazer? I have a gorgeous one, but I feel it swallows me. I would first try styling it with a couple of layers

maybe a tee and a hoodie) underneath like this adorable travel look on Jennifer Anniston’s character in the Morning Show. That might help it feel less gargantuan than when you wear it with something slimming like a slip dress where the difference in fit between the two pieces is more dramatic.

Best brands for petite/short blazers? Check out Quince. I have a linen blazer form them that is a shorter length which might work really well for you. I recommend searching for a more tailored blazer rather than an oversized piece as it will be easier to get the proportions right for your frame. If you are having trouble finding the right length of a regular blazer, look for a boucle blazer that will be shorter and more fitted. Cropped blazers are also popping onto the scene this spring which will be easier to fit.

What to wear with it - bottoms and shoes? Jeans work great. Wide legs can work but a straight leg or skinny are much simpler to style with a blazer. I typically recommend boots, mules, sandals, sneakers or a heel with a blazer. Hopefully, the outfit inspo in this post is helpful!

Best shirts to wear under them? I love the casual contrast of a graphic tee. A tank or v-neck can also do a great job at helping create some shape underneath the blazer.

How to not look like a business woman? First off, there is nothing wrong with looking like the boss! But I totally get the question. Use the tips above for pulling in more casual pieces and also add some of your personality to the look to tailor it to you and help it steer more toward your personal style and away from a formal professional look.

How do you know if it fits right? I think the beauty of the oversized blazer is that the fit is a lot more optional and forgiving. It’s really up to what you feel great in and what works best for your proportions.

How to wear an oversized blazer with wide leg pants/jeans? Here’s my favorite way - a silk cami underneath or another fitted top. Roll the sleeves up and choose a feminine shoe like a heeled sandal. A belt also helps to draw the eye to the waistline inside of the blazer to break up the square shape.
