Sewing a Scallop Trimmed Tank

Inspired by Sézane… again.
When this peplum tank from Sézane kept popping up all over my feed convincing me that all the “hot girls” are wearing it this summer, I decided I better take a stab at sewing my own version. After all, the algorithm knew I needed this blouse.
Process
I drafted my own tank top bodice by sketching off my measurements. Since my homemade pattern was untested, I knew this first attempt would be a wearable toile (a.k.a. a practice garment but hopefully nice enough to wear out).
And as expected, the fit wasn’t perfect. The Back bodice piece in particular was extremely loose, so I pleated it.
Two “aha” moments
Now you can probably surmise this, but I am a details girl when it comes to clothes. I’m a sucker for anything delicate and detailed like scallops, embroidery or lace eyelet. And that includes tiny buttons. I can’t get enough of them.
But when I’m the one sewing a garment, buttons are a headache. Whether the design calls for button holes or loops, I find that mundane repetitive part of the process a little grueling.
So imagine my utter delight when I discovered elastic button loop trim exists on Amazon. Hello! No more excuses to avoid tiny buttons on every project from here on out.
Here’s a link to the premade button loops. Click here. I was a little disappointed that this is for only a 12” length. I didn’t read the description closely and was expecting an entire yard. But after sewing with these and experiencing how easy they were to add to a top, I’m hooked and I don’t mind the price.
“Aha” number two was how to add a sweet mini scallop trim to my hem with, of all things, embroidery floss!
I saw this next level sewing hack in a reel first - here's the link to watch. And then looked up the full tutorial on the Corner Stitch blog here. It turned out to be such an easy add but made the piece feel so much more “detailed” and special. And I liked adding a tiny bit of subtle color to the top since my fabric lacked the lace of the inspo top.
So while my version doesn’t look exactly like the Sézane tank, I’m content with how it turned out and super excited to use what I learned on future projects.
I’ll link the full outfit here.
Jeans are TTS and a nice long length - I just cuffed them here for fun. Shoes fit a little narrow. And jewelry as always is 10% off with code: ALEX10 on your first purchase at Sela.
