12 Pieces for a French Girl Fall Capsule

12 Pieces for a French Girl Fall Capsule

Last summer, I plunged down the Youtube rabbit hole of French girl style. What makes the aesthetic mysterious, effortless and chic but messy yet refined all at the same time? By fall, I'd wound up with bangs, or as a French girl would say, "fringe." By spring I was sewing my own trench coat and investing in rigid all cotton jeans. Here we are a year later, and I think I've boiled down the quintessential hallmark pieces of a Parisian inspired wardrobe into 12 pieces.

1. Trench Coat

As with all of the following items, a trench might not be the perfect fit for your lifestyle, your geographical weather and personal style. So you can take the inspo of a long outerwear layer and subsitute it with with you might have or love - a black cocoon coat, a long camel sweater coat, etc. But if you love the classic trench like I do, here's some inspo. 2. Blazer

It doesn't really matter white color or style blazer you choose - vintage, double breasted, linen, wool, tweed, etc. Just wear it a tad oversized to nail that effortless French street style look. I'm testing out a new Linen Blazer from Quince this month. I'll let you know if it's amazing and link it here later.

3. Breton Striped Sweater/Shirt

The name for this wardrobe classic comes from a region in far northern France called Brittany where Breton fishermen first wore the classic striped cotton shirt. In Fall 2022, it's gaining fresh popularity with many variations from a wide striped mock neck sweater version to the classic cotton boatneck shirt.

4. Jeans

A good French girl is serious about her denim and always on the hunt for a vintage gem. While long wide legs are in currently, a cropped length is always very chic. And a vintage inspired high waist is my personal favorite in hard denim. I think Agolde does the best job at bringing this vintage look and wash in a brand new jean. Below are a few of my favorite styles.

5. White Button Up

The white button up shirt is something most of us already have in our closet and it's a layering star.

6. White Tee

This one speaks for itself, ladies and gentlemen. But if you cringe at the risk of stains, feel free to substitute with a chic black tee or even heather gray.New Paragraph

7. White Sneakers

A white sneaker is a practical shoe that somehow manages to stay stylish and add a little flair to dresses and jeans. My favorite pair is from Soludos.

8. Leather Jacket

A black leather jacket is French girl armor. My moto jacket is from Able and it's a beautiful buttery soft piece. I have the cognac color but it comes in a stunning black, too.

9. Minimal Gold Jewelry

Simple gold jewelry is the perfect accent to every French inspired outfit. Gold hoop earrings and a gold coin necklace or layered gold chains are refined and elegant. I'm excited to share some pieces from a beautiful new jewelry partner called Sela Designs. 100% of their proceeds go to end human trafficking. I'll share more soon. But for now, here are some great French girl pieces from Sela.

10. Ballet Flats

The ultimate classic is of course the Chanel ballet flats. Though a simple black flat goes a long ways, too. Personally, I haven't met a flat yet that didn't make my heels blister and sometimes bleed. So I prefer the look of an open backed mule. You can get all the sophistication of a loafer and the pointed toe femininity of a ballet flat rolled into one more comfortable shoe.

11. The Everyday Bag

A perfect go with everything purse makes completing any outfit simple and polished. My go to in a small leather tote. But there are other very French bag options that pair well with almost any outfit like a basket purse or a bucket bag.

12. Leather Belt

Finally, a belt is a timeless accent that can serve so many purposes in your closet from defining the waist, creating structure and contrast to just adding a little interest. My advice for choosing a great all around belt is to select a leather color that matches your favorite shoes. So if you wear a lot of brown leather sandals, opt for a matching cognac leather color. But if you find yourself consistently reaching for a pair of black loafers, then choose a black belt. This little bit of coordination in an outfit really rounds things out like a good story teller revisiting the hook line at the story's end.

Checklist - What's Already in Your Closet?

Here's a quick checklist to take back to your closet and see what you already have that could be the building blocks of a great Fall French Style Capsule. Plus, it will show you where you might want to shop and build out your wardrobe.

  • Trench Coat (Or long cocoon coat depending on where you live and your lifestyle.)
  • Blazer (You can opt for a sweater blazer for a more cozy casual lifestyle.)
  • Striped Sweater (You can incorporate the Breton stripe in a long sleeve shirt, a cardigan, a mockneck sweater, etc.)
  • Jeans
  • White button up
  • White tee
  • Sneakers (Use what you have. If you have high top converse use these to incorporate a little American edge into your Parisian look.)
  • Moto jacket (Another option here would be a pea coat - something that has some structure and edge for an outerwear option.)
  • Gold Jewelry (A coin necklace, chain necklace, gold hoop earrings or pearl studs. Choose your everyday capsule pieces and try layering them, too.)
  • Flats (Substitute for your favorite refined every day shoe. Mules, Loafers, sandals, etc.)
  • Purse (Here a little black handbag is classic. But you can choose whatever color best coordinates with your closet pallet.)
  • Belt (Don't forget to match your belt to your shoes when you can. It's like tying a bow on your outfit.)
